The Brief History of Apple's Logo

Apple’s logo has undergone several changes since the company’s founding in 1976. The original logo featured Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree with a quote from William Blake’s poem “Auguries of Innocence”: “Newton…a mind forever voyaging through strange seas of thought…alone.” The logo was designed by Ronald Wayne, one of Apple’s co-founders.

In 1977, the logo was revised to feature a rainbow-colored apple with a bite taken out of it. The new logo was designed by Rob Janoff and was meant to symbolize the “byte” missing from Apple’s computer name.

In 1998, the logo was changed again to a monochrome silhouette of an apple with a bite taken out of it. The new logo was designed by Jonathan Ive and was meant to be a more minimalist and modern take on the previous logo.

In 2016, the logo was updated once more to feature a clean, white apple with a bite taken out of it. The new logo was designed by Apple’s in-house design team and is meant to represent the company’s “simplicity, elegance, and innovation.”
